Stripped Down

“Stripped Down is an exploration of an existential Waterloo, a story of personal cataclysms so profound and baffling that it defies clean outlines of definition or diagnoses, denying lasting answers. That Lana finds moments of humor and humanity in such a rout suggests these experiences are reserved for the exceptionally ambitious souls who want to know the full panoply of what it means to be human.”

About

Lana Druzar is my pen name.  I am a professional historian, researcher, and entrepreneur whose life was stripped down after contracting neuropsychiatric Lyme Disease in late 2016.

Always a writer, the only form of writing I could effect during this healing journey was rhyme.  Rhyming verse flowed out of me like a rap song slamming itself in my head.  Writing Stripped Down proved a cathartic emotional release and provided an outlet for creative expression for symptoms I could not otherwise describe.

It is my sincere hope that Stripped Down resonates and touches readers with Lyme Disease, chronic illness, or other challenges life brings.  Though stripped down, I am rebuilding my life as an accidental advocate for neuropsychiatric Lyme.  Stay tuned to a new initiative that combines thought leadership and community support along the healing journey for this often-underserved audience.

Per the wise advice of a friend, I am working to transform my broken heart into art with continued words that speak2bheard.  Thank you for listening,

Ilana

Stripped Down

Stripped Down is a compilation of poems, prose, and spoken-word pieces exploring life moments when I felt naked–literally or figuratively–and afraid. They echo from isolated, rubber rooms of a New England psychiatric facility (where I self-committed not knowing my psychiatric symptoms were borne of Lyme Disease) to the bustling glass skyscrapers of downtown New York City. I have infused humor and hope as they shone through, demanding the light. I also wrote to expose my truth, uncensored, and remind readers that we are all frail in our shared humanity.

“Sometimes we’re given so much, just to give it all back.” So says Lana’s wise grandmother to a younger Lana in the lovely piece, Mir Far Dir. This is very much the set up for the story the rest of the book will tell—one of personal cataclysms so profound and baffling that it defies clean outlines of definition or diagnoses, denying lasting answers or solutions. Other pieces highlight the only handholds that can be found in such a context of incoherence—rage, insupportable grief, confusion, and, finally, shock. That Lana finds moments of humor and humanity in such a rout suggests these experiences are reserved for the exceptionally brave and ambitious souls who want to know the full panoply of what it means to be human. This is an exploration of an existential Waterloo.”

“Haunting, witty, brave, and truthful portray of the human condition. Sheer will in full sight.  The author’s way with words felt like an orchestra and moved me deeply. If you are on a journey with any chronic illness, this book will help you feel a little less alone and very seen.”

“If you are dealing with Lyme disease or are close to someone who is, Stripped Down is a must read. This poignant and powerful book gives the reader a visceral understanding of how chronic Lyme can disassemble a life. Additionally, it's a wonderful book of powerful prose that speaks to our human struggles. Warning: you may just tap your foot to the beat of def jam poetry in written word.”

“Affecting and effective writing, a strong personal voice, with a note of humor. I recommend it to spoken word and poetry fans. Read it aloud to yourself to experience it fully.”

“I read this book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down.  I thought it was brilliant.  It told of painful experiences few would have the courage to share.  This author must keep on writing!”

“Affecting and effective writing, a strong personal voice, with a note of humor. I recommend it to spoken word and poetry fans. Read it aloud to yourself to experience it fully.”

Stripped Down brings auditory media to the printed page. There’s comedy, tragedy and dramedy. It’s eloquently crafted, an amusing and effortless read, and a deep insight into Lyme disease. I recommend this to anyone, any age, any time.”

“Beautiful and vulnerable poetry…written with grace and humor. Stripped Down is a perfect title, as a fellow traveler on a healing journey, I can attest to how it truly does strip away all that you thought you were.”

Through Ilana’s Lens

I have always loved taking photographs, not appreciating how much photography could facilitate healing. Lyme Disease affected my vision, not in a way that is explicable, except to say, that I see in 2D. Snapping pictures on my dated iPhone added a third (maybe even 4th or 5th) dimension–the dimension of me viewing the world through an unusual lens. Through Ilana’s Lens features snapshots of life moments where my busy left, rational brain hushed and the serene right, creative side found new visual expression.
